The
summer can be a fun time of the year for all.
The Central New York SPCA would like to make
sure that is true for our pets. The CNYSPCA
would like to remind all pet owners of some
simple precautions to make summer a safe and
stress free time of year for our pets.
Always provide plenty of fresh water for your
pets.
Make
sure you have a cool, shady area for your pet
while he is outside
NEVER
leave your pet in a car!! A car can quickly
turn into an oven for a cat or a dog, even with
the windows open and the car parked in the
shade.
Try
to walk your dogs early in the day or later in
the afternoon, when the sun has started to set.
Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke:
-
excessive panting
-
red gums
-
disorientation
-
dry gums
If
you think your pet may be suffering from
heatstroke, cool the body by immersing the pet
in a tub of cool water or hosing your pet down,
and wrapping them in a cool blanket or towel.
Do not use cold water – it can cause shock and
make sure to contact your vet immediately.
Dogs
can burn their foot pads on hot sidewalks and
black top, so avoid this area when ever possible
Dogs
with flat faces or heavy coats, older animals
and overweight animals are at greater risk for
overheating during the summer months, so pay
extra attention to them.
By
taking some extra time to follow these simple
precautions, the summer can be a safe and fun
filled time of the year for the WHOLE family.
